During this year's Commencement ceremony, Alumni Board member Catherine (Grainger) Justice ’05 presented this year's Alumni Service Award to George B. Cartledge III ’82, former board member and parent of alums George ’14 and Joseph Cartledge ’16, graduating senior Emma Cartledge and Charlotte Cartledge ’21. Mrs. Justice's remarks were as follows: The Alumni Service Award is presented annually to one outstanding alumnus/alumna who has made significant contributions to the school or school community. Our 2018 Alumni Service Award recipient is George B. Cartledge III ’82. George served on the North Cross Board of Trustees for 13 years and as the Chair of the Trustees Committee for six years where he was instrumental in recruiting many outstanding Trustees who have directly contributed to the success of the school. George was the co-chairman of the Inspiring Minds Campaign which raised $3.5 million for the renovation of Eaton Hall. He has been a consistent and generous supporter of North Cross. He is president and co-owner of Grand Home Furnishings—a successful furniture company headquartered in Roanoke with 17 locations in Virginia, West Virginia and Tennessee. It has been a family-run business for the past 70 years, with George serving as president for more than 20 years. His family also operates the Cartledge Charitable Foundation, which gives primarily to the arts and culture, higher education, social services, health organizations, and youth organizations. George is actively involved in our community and has served on numerous boards such as the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute’s Advisory Board, the Art Museum of Western Virginia Board, the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, the Mill Mountain Theatre Board, the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation Board and the Carilion Medical Center Board. He and his wife, Barbara, are parents of former North Cross students, George ’14 and Joseph ’16. His daughter Emma ’18 graduates today and Charlotte is a member of the Class of ’21. After graduating from North Cross in 1982, he earned his bachelor’s degree in history and finance from Virginia Tech in 1986.
